Meet Polka and Dot: America’s Only Spotted Owls in Programs to Help Save the Species

Dot on her nestTheir owlets are helping save the Northern Spotted Owl threatened species in the Oregon and British Columbia.

In the past several years, owlets born to America's only northern spotted owls to have bred in captivity, Polka and Dot, have been released to “foster” nests in the wild in Oregon and have gone to a breeding center in British Columbia to help in efforts to save this controversial threatened species.

Raptors will not breed in captivity unless they are completely secure in their environment. The owlets are a testament to the quality of the Museum’s wildlife program.

Their fertility is also are noteworthy because they are each about 25 years old.

Get eye-to-eye with these remarkable raptors at their re-created forest habitat exhibit.

Porcupines Thistle and Honeysuckle share a natural habitat exhibit. Their daughter, Magnolia, is starring in educational programs in the Washington, D.C., area.

Other animals who await you at the center include Charisma and Kokanee the bald eagles, Nicholas the golden eagle, Merry the fox, and more..
